PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) - Authorities say two Mercer County inmates were injured in separate attacks by fellow prisoners in a holding cell.

Assistant prosecutor Janet Williamson tells media outlets that 23-year-old Cassidy Byrd of Bluefield was at the Mercer County Courthouse for a preliminary hearing when he was attacked Monday. Fifty-year-old James Irvin was scheduled to appear in court Monday for the setting of a trial date.

Both inmates were taken to a Princeton hospital for treatment. Their conditions weren't immediately available.

Mercer County sheriff's Detective Cpl. Steven A. Sommers says the inmates were attacked by different assailants.

Both men face charges involving crimes against children.

Byrd is charged with the death of a child by a parent, custodian or guardian by abuse. Irving faces multiple counts of sexual assault and sexual abuse.
