A memorial for fire fighters and emergency service personnel is taking place today in Nicholas County.

A statue was dedicated to fallen fire fighters in Summersville. The idea began a year ago and came to fruition this afternoon at the Nicholas County courthouse. Medals of honor were given to the families of fallen emergency service personnel. A letter from governor Earl Ray Tomblin was also read to the crowd. Attendees spoke about what the dedication means to them.

"I approached county commission with the idea shortly after the session last year and they partnered with me as far as setting the funds together but really, the people who did it were the ms and the fire fighters" said State Senator Greg Tucker

"My husband was a good person, honorable, integrity and he was always caring and always wanted to help everybody and it's an honor to accept his medal today" said Gloria Ritchie

"It means a great deal to me because to me, volunteer people is what it's all about" said Richard Spencer.

Today's guests say the location of the statue means it will be a constant reminder to remember emergency personnel that have passed away.
