WELCH - Animals in McDowell County have a new shelter while they wait to find their homes.

The McDowell County Humane Society was transformed Saturday morning with the help of local volunteers and national backers like Pedigree. Organizers hope the makeover will improve daily operations and make the shelter more inviting.

More than four million dogs enter shelters each year in the United States, and locals hope this effort will bring extra attention to the animals in need of a home.

The McDowell Humane Society is a no-kill shelter and operates solely on donations, according to its website.
