BECKLEY - Health care professionals in Raleigh County are encouraging older citizens to protect themselves against Shingles.
If you're 60 or older you should consider getting the Shingles vaccine, according to Candance Hurd, the Director of Nursing at the Beckley Raleigh County Health Department. The shot is currently in supply and can be provided to patients at low to no cost. While the Shingles Virus itself cannot be spread to others, a person with shingles can infect a child with Chicken Pox. Hurd said Shingles is very painful and the virus can affect your body for a lengthy period of time. Getting vaccinated can save you a lot of time and pain.
"Shingles for some people is very mild but for the majority of people they can have pain and some will have pain for even moths afterwards. The sores can be even blisters and very uncomfortable,” said Hurd.
Shingles shots are available at the Beckley -Raleigh County Health Department Monday through Friday from 7 to 5.
