Vets, hospital employees walk for homeless

BECKLEY - Employees who work for servicemen want to promote health and disease prevention amongst their patients.

Veterans and the public joined staff at the Beckley VA Medical Center for its Fourth Annual 2K Walk & Roll event.

The walk is held around the U.S. to encourage healthy habits before vets enter disease states. It's also an effort to end the nation's population of homeless vets by 2015.

Organizers said some movement is better than none at all.

“If we can get people to get up and participate in any activity at all, then that's counting toward their wellness and helping them take control of their healthcare,” Lorri Lambert told WOAY.

The hospital was shooting for more than 100 walkers. Wednesday’s walk coincides with the National Employee Health and Fitness Day.
