MOUNT HOPE - An investigation is underway into the attempted assault of a staff member at a Fayette County youth detention center, jail officials told WOAY Thursday.

A group of residents at the Gene Spadaro Juvenile Center attempted to assault a staff member Wednesday night, according to Lawrence Messina with the Division of Juvenile Services.

The extent of the injuries are unknown, but Messina told Newswatch that fellow employees acted quickly, appropriately and decisively to control the situation.

Messina is unsure if the kids involved will continue to be housed in the facility, but relocating them is an option.

Officials will perform an internal review and transfer information to the Fayette County Prosecutor's Office, which will then see if charges are warranted.

Gene Spadaro Juvenile Center is a 23-bed facility mostly for offenders waiting for the resolution of their cases, according to Messina.

Due to the nature of these facilities and the residents inside, these situations are sadly the reality of the environment, Messina told WOAY.
