BECKLEY – A record number of students are honored for their academic achievements in Raleigh County Friday afternoon.

The superintendent's senior scholar's luncheon kicked off without Superintendent Jim Brown who was absent due to family matters, but the celebration saluting the class of 2014 went off without a hitch.

Fourty-nine students from four Raleigh County high schools will graduate at the top of their class, summa cum laude. Those students earned a 4.0 GPA or higher.

“Senior year is a busy year with applications and things,” said Liberty High School senior Johnathon Proctor, “But it's been a good year. It's nice to celebrate our achievements.”

Marissa Fanary will be attending University of Charleston next year to student chemistry. She says this year was tough.

“AP bio, we had Ms. Sheila Lewis; that was fun… And calculus, calculus was hard,” added Fanary.

Commencements for the area high schools will be the weekend of May 23 at the Raleigh County Convention Center.
