BECKLEY - Beckley Police are investigating a possible homicide after a woman is found dead at a residence.

Detective Frank Priddy said officers responded to a report of a deceased person at 1214 South Fayette Street on March 16 around 5:15 p.m. The victim was identified as 76 year-old Sylvia Washington.

Priddy said Washington lived by herself and was found by a family friend that checked in on her periodically.

The body was sent to the medical examiner in Charleston for an autopsy and preliminary results indicate that Washington had some injuries consistent with homicide, according to Priddy. Officers are still waiting for the full results of the autopsy, which could take several weeks.

The Beckley Police Department Detective Bureau is working the investigation. Priddy said officers have identified some persons of interest and several people have been interviewed.  “We've interviewed several different people and we've been looking at several different possibilities in regards to this and basically what we're wanting to do here is let the community know what's going on, what actually did happen and we think there's a good possibility that someone might have some information in the community that could be beneficial," said Priddy.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Beckley Police Department at 304-256-1708 or Crime Stoppers at 304-255-STOP.
