BECKLEY - A non- profit invites you to walk a mile in someone else's shoes, by stepping out of yours.
The United Way of Southern West Virginia will host the ‘One Day Without Shoes' event Tuesday in uptown Beckley. TOMS, a company known for its shoe-giving charity, started the event and it has been growing ever since. United Way Director Margaret Ann O’Neal welcomed everyone to attend this life-changing experience, even if only for a short portion of the day. A dry spot will be set up to store the shoes of those participating in the walk, which will start at the Jim Word Memorial Park at 11:30 Tuesday.
O’Neal said it’s something everyone should experience firsthand. “It was really personal when it's you. Pumping gas without shoes and you have to walk through the grocery store or wherever your life takes you that day. It was very impactful and powerful and it reminded me every day of the challenges that especially our children face in South West Virginia as they struggle with the issues of poverty,” said O’Neal.
The ‘One Day Without Shoes’ event is free to the public. The United Way will be accepting donations of money or footwear to be given to those in the community that needs shoes.
