NEW RIVER GORGE NATIONAL PARK - Trails and climbing areas that were temporarily closed during the New River Gorge fire are now open to visitors.

The National Park Service said the Fern Creek fire is now 100 percent contained and 100 percent controlled.

Firefighters spent the day Saturday examining the fire area, during which they were unable to find any heat or smoke around the fire perimeter.

There is still smoldering material, but it poses no threat to containment lines, officials told WOAY.

Visitors are reminded to be safe, especially below the cliff line from Diamond Point downstream to Fern Creek.

The fire will not be officially declared out until the affected area receives more rainfall.
