Local runners are celebrating after their participation in a race this afternoon.

Athletes gathered around noon for the annual "It's your earth, run for the green" race held in Beckley. The race had a new starting location this year at Woodrow Wilson High School. The race is gaining popularity with prizes for the top three finishers in both the 10k and 5k divisions. Runner Lisa Shrewsberry says the race is a good opportunity to "compete while raising awareness.

"It's a good cause to remind people to recycle and to consider the earth and the footprint they're leaving on it. But then it's an awesome opportunity for runners in the area to get together and to put their training to the test."

First place in the 10k took home a grand total of $200 this year.
