BLUEFIELD - A Bluefield man is behind bars and another is in critical condition following an overnight shooting in Mercer County.

Detective K. L. Adams with Bluefield Police said Trayvon Strange, 20, was arrested for allegedly shooting his neighbor, Steven Rhodes.

Adams said police received a complaint call between 8 and 9 p.m. Monday that two men had an altercation at an apartment building on Lewis Street, with one man supposedly having a firearm. When police arrived, Rhodes told him his neighbor kicked his door in and had a firearm.

Police left the area after questioning and received a call about 15 minutes later that shots had been fired at the same location, so they returned and found Rhodes lying in the doorway with a gunshot wound to his head, according to Adams. It appeared the shot was fired at close-range.

Rhodes told police that Strange shot him, according to Adams. Rhodes was sent to Bluefield Regional Medical Center, then flown to CAMC.

Adams said shortly thereafter, police arrested Strange, who lives in the same apartment complex. He is in Southern Regional Jail on $100,000 cash-only bond. Rhodes is currently in the intensive care unit.
