PAX - Fayette County crews are trying to determine what may have caused a large fire in an abandoned home in Pax Saturday evening.
The home on Paint Creek Road was engulfed in flames around 7 p.m. For hours Pax, Mount Hope and Bradley-Prosperity volunteer fire departments used multiple engines to battle the blaze.
Officials on scene told Newswatch that the home has been abandoned for about five years. It may be suspicious because no power was connected to it. Several residents said the home was being rented out by its owner, but no one was living in it at the time.
Firefighters said their biggest struggle was trying to protect structures around it from catching fire.
"It's a rough battle," Pax Asst. Chief Josh Johnson told WOAY. "It's uphill. Everything is rotten, and you ain't really got nothing to stand on. The roof is falling in. It's a pretty good fire."
Smoke from the fire could been seen from miles away.
