BEAVER - A nursing program held a mandatory seminar as a part of April's National Child Abuse Awareness and Prevention Month.
Organizers said ‘Just for Kids' offers comprehensive sexual abuse and prevention training. The programming is geared towards educating adults about how to protect children by recognizing sexual abuse and responding to it responsibly. On Friday, Bluefield State College listened to the presentation in hopes of applying new knowledge to their upcoming careers. Organizers said this information is crucial because of this unfortunate truth: 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys are sexually abused before they turn 18.
Kathy Bailey, an educator from Raleigh General Hospital, said, “it is a journey that invades the child in such a negative way and takes away their trust and confidence and this is being done by adults and it is just devastating and criminal."
