GARY - A handgun reported stolen in New York City more than 40 years ago was recovered in McDowell County during a traffic stop.

Gary Police Chief S.P. McKinney cited the male driver last week for not wearing a seat belt and discovered that he had a loaded .357 Magnum in the vehicle. McKinney said the man had a valid Virginia concealed carry permit, but a check of the gun revealed that it was reported stolen in New York City on April 26, 1967.

McKinney said he did not charge the man regarding the gun, as the man did have any criminal involvement in that case. McKinney said he contacted the New York City Police Department to report the gun had been recovered.
