SMITHERS - A repeat DUI offender is behind bars again after authorities say he was driving drunk with his 3-week-old newborn in the backseat.

Leo Lester Belcher, 41, was arrested by the Smithers Police Department for charges including DUI with a minor in the vehicle, child abuse creating risk of injury, obstructing and fleeing on foot.

Sgt. C.L. Burkhammer said the mother of the child, Jill Conley, was also arrested.

A clerk working at an Ansted convenience store notified police that Belcher was allegedly driving highly intoxicated.
Authorities said the pair was pulled over on Route-60 when Belcher tried to escape. Conley faces a charge of permitting DUI. The baby is in the custody of the grandparents.
