BECKLEY – With the warm spring weather comes opening day for a gun club in Raleigh County.

The Beckley Gun Club opens its shooting season today with the annual “3-Gun Match” Sunday.

Officials say this format of shooting is the fastest growing shooting sport in the nation. In this contest, shooters fire at a variety of targets using a rifle, a pistol, and a shotgun.

Time is the measure but accuracy counts too as you are penalized for missing targets. Beckley Gun Club President James Long says more than 50 shooters came out to the range today, tuning up their skills in a variety of ways.

“You got to be well rounded in all three. You could be really good with a pistol and not so good with a shotgun, so that's where it's a drag race. You got to be good on your hits, your speed, your reloads.”

The Gun Club has six more meets planned through October, including law enforcement matches and a pistols-only competition.
