BECKLEY - A family was able to escape without injury after their home caught fire in Beckley Friday morning.
Residents said it happened a little before 10 a.m. at 102 Johnston Street, just off Robert C. Byrd Dr. Firefighters said the fire was blowing out of the front window when they arrived. They were able to get it under control in 5 minutes, containing it to just the front area of the home.
Family members were home at the time, but they had all made it out okay before firefighters arrived. Residents who were home said the fire started in the middle level of the house where nobody was living. These residents, originally from Wyoming County, said they are suspicious about how the fire started.
Alter Sheppard, resident living in the lowest level of the home, said, “just thank God nobody got hurt...it could have been a lot worse."
A fund has been set up through Red Cross to provide assistance for this family. The cause of this fire is under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.
