BECKLEY - An arrest was made by Beckley Police on Tuesday, following a hotel robbery from the weekend.
Detective David Allard said 31 year-old Ronald "RJ" Mayo of the Beckley area was taken into custody on Tuesday at a Rite Aid in Beckley, thanks to tips from the community. Mayo is charged with first-degree robbery. Allard said Mayo was caught on surveillance footage at the Quality Inn on Harper Road.
Authorities said he presented the hotel clerk with a note saying he had a weapon on him. The crime happened just before one 1:00 Sunday morning. Dispatchers said the call came in after the robbery occurred, and the scene was cleared hours later. Allard said an arrest made this quickly can be attributed to a community effort.
"Anytime that you have an armed robbery, it's a case that we take very serious and it's a very severe crime, a crime of violence by its nature, so it feels good anytime that you're able to get a person like that off the road. Especially as quick as we were able to, through tips in the community, people who take an interest, call in and provide information that ultimately led to his arrest,” said Allard.
Mayo was arraigned in Magistrate Peck's Court and remains in Southern Regional Jail on a $75,000 dollar bond.
