BECKLEY – A Raleigh County child service is drawing attention to the importance of the education of our youth.

The Week of The Young Child is in its 43rd year, and MountainHeart Community Services is celebrating children in those all-important learning years.

MountainHeart stretches across 12 counties in Southern West Virginia and each center is hosting activities, games, and story time for kids in the area.

Administrator Joanne McCallister says it's vital to pay close attention to children as they're growing to encourage proper mental and physical development.

“The importance of doing things that will encourage the fine motor, large motor skills, and their cognitive things. You know, if they don't learn things when they're very young it's much much harder.”

This week is sponsored by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and is celebrated nation-wide.
