Marshall Softball Hits The Road To Resume Conference Action

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall softball (12-23, 3-6 C-USA) will return to Conference USA play this weekend when it travels to Murfreesboro, Tenn., for a three-game series against Middle Tennessee.

This will be the third meeting between the new C-USA foes, who are currently tied at one victory a piece in the all-time series. The two teams last met in 2011, when the Blue Raiders defeated the Thundering Herd 3-2 in the Auburn War Eagle Classic.

Junior Kristina Braxton (Woodbridge, Va.) had a big day against Radford at home on Wednesday. The former slap hitter showed her power as she connected for a blast over the right field wall to record her first collegiate home run. Braxton went 2-for-4 on the day with 3 RBI.

Freshman pitcher Jordan Dixon (Edmond, Okla.) earned both victories in the doubleheader sweep and also had a collegiate first, keeping Radford off the board in game one to earn her first career shutout. Dixon fanned 10 Highlanders in the first game, her second-highest mark of the season – followed by six strikeouts in Game 2. Dixon’s record sits at 9-15 heading into the weekend. She has a 5.64 ERA and 135 strikeouts.

Sophomore Kaelynn Greene (Eastvale, Calif.) has continuously stayed at the top of the Herd’s leader boards. She has a team-best .400 batting average and 48 hits. She holds an 11-game reaching-base streak – the team’s longest of the season.

Sophomore Shaelynn Braxton (Woodbridge, Va.) has the second-highest mark with a .327 average, followed by freshman Morgan Zerkle (Milton, W.Va.) at .308. Kristina Braxton is at .299.

S. Braxton leads Marshall with 68 total bases, 27 RBI, 10 home runs and a .694 slugging percentage.

Marshall has four student-athletes ranking in the top 5 in C-USA play, and one team first-place standing.

Offensively, S. Braxton is tied for the third-highest rank in home runs (10) and fifth-most RBI (27). Zerkle leads the league in stolen bases (24), while Greene sits tied for fourth (15). As a team, the Herd ranks No. 1 in stolen bases with 61.

In the circle, Dixon has ranks fourth with 120.1 innings pitched..

MTSU has a four-game losing streak, all on the road, against Jacksonville State, Charlotte and Western Kentucky.

Middle Tennessee’s highest batting average belongs to junior Laura Dukes, at .400. She is tied with senior Kayla Toney for a team-high 38 hits. Toney leads the Blue Raiders with 25 RBI, six home runs and 64 total bases. The duo also holds the top two spots for slugging percentages (.611 and .547, respectively) and on-base percentages (.558 and .413).

Middle Tennessee relies on a trio of pitchers, and each has made at least 20 appearances and 11 starts. Senior Jordyn Fisherback has a 3-9 record and 4.34 ERA. Senior Shelby Stinnett is 2-12 and has made a team-high 26 appearances behind a 4.58 ERA. With a 5.35 ERA, junior Caitlin McClure holds a 2-8 record.

Marshall will remain on the road to face Northern Kentucky in a doubleheader on Tuesday, April 8, before returning home for a C-USA series against North Texas. The first of the three games against the Mean Green (April 12, opener of a doubleheader) will be televised nationally by Fox Sports with a noon start.
