Murder trial begins in Fayette County

FAYETTEVILLE – A Fayette County man is on trial for murder after an alleged shooting that took place a year ago Thursday.

Matthew Gravley, 30, of Hilltop is charged with the murder of Gary Smith, 22.

The incident took place at the Mountainair Mobile Home Park in Glen Jean last April.

The prosecution began calling witnesses to the stand this morning, including Smith's mother, Bonnie Adkins, who explained what she saw the day of the shooting.

The Chief Medical Examiner of West Virginia, Dr. Allen Mock, also testified. He outlined the results of the autopsy which concluded Smith was shot in the back. The prosecution utilized a mannequin to show where the bullet entered and exited Smith’s body.

Also taking the stand for the state was the first responding police officer, Deputy S. K. Neal, and firearm and toolmark examiner for the West Virginia State Police, Phillips Cochran.
