BECKLEY – A flag is raised in Raleigh County to recognize organ donors.

Raleigh General Hospital, partnered with the Center for Organ Recovery, is promoting Organ Donor Awareness Month.

A flag is raised in front of the hospital to honor those who lost their lives but chose to improve the lives of others.

Officials say there are more than 120,000 people waiting for organs nation-wide and the number continues to climb.

Nancy Edwards is mother of an organ recipient and a nurse at Raleigh General. She says she knows how important donating is.

“Raising that flag was very emotional for me to watch it go up … The surgeon had told me that had the liver not come when it did, she would not have been around much longer.”

Officials encourage you to add an organ donor sticker to your driver’s license, and tell your family of your wishes.
