BECKLEY - Two men are behind bars this weekend in separate cases after authorities say they made purchases with checks that were not their own.

Andrew Wayne Powell, 27, was booked into Southern Regional Jail Saturday by State Police in Beckley. Troopers said he was extradited from Tazewell County, and faces charges including uttering, conspiracy to commit a felony and obtaining goods by false pretenses.

Shawn Michael Ruddy, 29, was arrested by Trp. J.B. Frye after a weeks-long investigation. Ruddy is accused of stealing a woman's checkbook and using her money at several Beckley businesses. Authorities said he is caught on camera carrying out the crimes.

Ruddy faces six counts of forgery and six counts of uttering, according to jail officials. Authorities said forgery is the act of writing a false check, and uttering involves using it.
