BECKLEY - The City of Beckley discussed disaster preparation after cuts to the Director of Emergency Services position.
The Raleigh County Commission on Aging hosted a meeting with the Mayor, emergency personnel, Chamber of Commerce members and others to discuss how Beckley should handle any future disasters. Of course the chemical spill in Charleston, this winter's inclement weather and power outages have been weighing on the minds of all city officials as they face another year. The goal is to be better prepared.
President of the Beckley-Raleigh County Chamber of Commerce, Ellen Taylor, said, "they say, when there is a disaster you really should be prepared for about 3 days to take care of yourself and not depend on emergency services because emergency services may just be overwhelmed. This is so important for people to understand as individuals and as businesses to prepare yourself."
A follow up meeting about Beckley's preparedness will be scheduled within the next 3-4 weeks to further explore how to handle emergency situations.
