Family tries to recover from a total loss

Local - 3/20/2014 4:48 PM by Stuart Hammer

CERES – A family in Mercer County is dealing with heartache Thursday as they've lost a house and their dogs.

A fire in Green Valley Wednesday totaled the home.

The family's two dogs were inside at the time, and they were both lost in the fire. They buried their best friends behind the charred remains of the garage Thursday morning.

The six-alarm fire on Ceres Road brought Green Valley, Bluewell, East River, Montcalm, Matoaka, and Oakvale fire departments to the scene.

There were reports of the homeowner storing ammunition and gunpowder in the house and that it was exploding during the fire, but the owner tells Newswatch that is false. He kept his ammo in a shed behind the house that was untouched in the blaze.

Aside from the two dogs there were no injuries in the fire.
