BECKLEY - The head of Raleigh County Schools announces he is stepping down.

Superintendent Jim Brown cited personal reasons in his statement of resignation Tuesday. Brown has been the leader of Raleigh County School system for nineteen months. Brown's two year contract was slated to expire this year. Brown acknowledges the accomplishments and progress made by the school system during his tenure.

A search for his replacement is underway.

His full statement is quoted below:

"This morning, I tendered my resignation as superintendent of Raleigh County Schools effective June 30th for personal reasons.  Over the past nineteen months, our district leadership team has worked very hard to establish a framework aligned with high quality standards that is data driven, results oriented and student centered.  Our work is consistent with best practice models used all across the nation in high performing schools and districts.

As superintendent, I recognize that change is hard.  I also know that it is not only inevitable but necessary.

Ultimately, I stand by the work that we have done.  Every decision we have made has been in the best interest of the students we serve.

Thank you.

Jim Brown, Superintendent Raleigh County Schools"
