BLUEWELL - One man is dead and another is in critical condition following an overnight car accident in Bluewell.

Lieutenant Joe Parks with the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said a car hit a utility pole and then hit a house on Lorton Lick Road in Bluewell around 11:20 p.m. Monday. Two men in their 20s were traveling from Bluewell to Montcalm, about one mile from the Route 52 intersection. Witnesses said the car was traveling at highway speed.

Bluefield Rescue, Bluewell Fire Department and Green Valley Fire Department responded to the scene, as well as the Sheriff’s Department. Green Valley firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the two men from the car, according to Parks.

One of the men was confirmed dead on the scene, according to Parks. The other was transported with severe head trauma to Bluefield Regional Medical Center, then transferred to either a Roanoke or Charleston hospital.

Parks said weather and road conditions did not appear to be a factor in the accident. The Sheriff’s Department is handling the ongoing investigation.
