IAEGER - A man faces felony animal cruelty charges after the McDowell County Sheriff's Office responded to a complaint of animal abuse.

Sheriff Martin West said the Sheriff's Office Humane Officer Deputy Anthony Epper went to the residence of Joshua Brett Maxwell, 29, in the Iaeger area Tuesday and found a female dog and her two pups dead in the backyard. The dogs looked to have been starved and it appeared they had been dead for a few days.

The mother dog was tangled up on a short leash and the humane officer did not see any water or food bowls nearby, according to West. Maxwell is charged with three counts of cruelty to animals causing death. He was arraigned Thursday morning and is awaiting transportation to Southwestern Regional Jail.
