BECKLEY - The Raleigh County School Board held a public meeting on Tuesday night to discuss possible school calendars for the 2014-2015 school year.

The Raleigh County Board of Education held a meeting Tuesday night for parents and members of the community to comment on the school calendar for next year. The purpose of this meeting is to allow employees from the school district, parents and community members to weigh in on how the calendar should be developed. Superintendent Jim Brown said, due to many restrictions, the only areas of the calendar that can be changed is Thanksgiving Break or Spring Break.

There are currently 2 models up for discussion and the main difference is the start and end of the instructional session. Parents brought up their many concerns to the Board including how snow days effect businesses, athletes, and others. Brown said they will make sure instructional time is met.

"I think it's something that's on a lot of people's minds. Right now we know that the new guideline requires that we have 180 days of instruction so we will see to it that the calendar is extended to June, depending on how many days that we missed," said Brown.

Board members said, for the most part, their hands are tied but they hold the meeting to hear suggestions about the both calendar options.
