UPDATE: Police rule out trauma in death of two infants

HILLTOP – The Fayette County Sheriff's Office continues its investigation into the deaths of two infant children in the Hilltop area.

According to police, autopsies were performed on the two infants this morning.

The preliminary reports indicate that neither of the children suffered from trauma, suffocation, or strangulation.

Sheriff Steve Kessler says a final determination of the cause of death cannot be made until toxicology reports have been completed. The medical examiner will try to determine if the infants ingested or were exposed to any toxic substances.

HILLTOP - The Fayette County Sheriff's Office is investigating the deaths of two infant children in the Hilltop area.

Sheriff Steve Kessler says 911 dispatchers were notified around 9am Tuesday, that a one-year-old girl and a three-month-old boy were unconscious and not breathing at a residence in the Mountainair Mobile Home Park. Deputy Sheriffs responded to the scene and initiated cpr on the infants until ems arrived. The infants were then transported to Plateau Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.

Police say carbon monoxide poisoning has been ruled out at this time and the cause and manner of the deaths is not known.Officials say they won't know more until the autopsies are performed at The State Medical Examiner's Office.

At this point police aren't naming anyone of wrong doing, Captain Jim Sizemore with the Sheriff's Department says, "Again we're not pointing fingers at anyone all I know at this point - we have two dead children and we're going to do everything possible to find out how and why they died.

Police say, another child, a four-year-old was also home and taken to the hospital for observation, but was treated and released.

Fayette County 911 dispatchers were notified around 9 a.m. Tuesday that a one-year-old and a three-month-old child were unconscious and not breathing at a residence in the Mountainair Mobile Home Park, according to Sheriff Steve Kessler. Deputy sheriffs responded to the scene and initiated CPR on the infants until EMS arrived. The infants were then transported to Plateau Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead after extensive efforts to resuscitate them. 

The cause and manner of the deaths is not known at this time, according to Kessler. The incident remains under investigation.
