CRAB ORCHARD - A fire in Crab Orchard required the assistance of four fire departments; Coal City, Sophia Volunteer, Sophia City, and Mabscott, and luckily nobody was hurt.

Officials said the call came in after 12 for a home on the 100 block of Brethren Road that had smoke coming from the roof. Chief Jeff Pittman with the Sophia City Volunteer Fire Department said he was first on scene and his department quickly assessed where the damage was. Pittman said the fire actually extinguished itself after igniting the surrounding area. Nobody was home at the time of the fire and neighbors freed all the pets that were in the house, getting them to safety before firefighters entered.

"Everybody was gone out of the house the neighbors had already gained entry and got the dogs out of the house. The fire dept. got here and we found a lamp that turned over and caught the carpet on fire and some clothing there," said Pittman.

Fire fighters advise everyone to check your electrical devices before leaving the house.
