Smoke detector tip

BECKLEY - Local officials want to remind residents to change their clocks this weekend, and also offer a safety tip.

Beckley Fire Chief Billie Trump said it's a good ‘rule of thumb;’ change your clocks, change your batteries. Trump explained how easy it is to remove the backing of your smoke detector and change the 9-volt battery. This simple tip could save your life someday. These detectors are only good for about 10 years,  so make sure you keep up on how old they're getting. Trump said if you're a disabled or elderly person in the community, the Beckley Fire Department will come over and do it for you free of charge.

Trump said, "one of the things that we always try to stress and its almost monotonous; change your time clocks, change the batteries in your smoke detectors and we're trying to urge everybody to take that one simple step that will help, perhaps save their lives."

A last tip: make sure not to forget about checking your carbon monoxide detectors routinely as well.
