CHARLESTON – A country legend has his song become a permanent part of West Virginia at the Capitol today.
“Take Me Home, Country Roads,” A John Denver hit song from the 1970s is made an official state song at the Capitol Friday.
The resolution passed through state legislature designating it as one of four state songs.
The Cabell Midland High School band, Appalachian Children's choir, and Governor Earl Ray Tomblin were in the Capitol rotunda to ring in the occasion.
Cabell Midland student and band field commander Matthew Wilcox says he’s ready for the show.
“(We’re) excited, a little bit nervous, got the anticipation. But we've been practicing so everything will go well... Hopefully.”
The effort was started two years ago by a Princeton radio host after playing the song on her morning show.
Cabell Midland’s show was a rousing success.
