BECKLEY – A Raleigh County school celebrates Black History Month on the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Park Middle School in Beckley held a program Thursday to honor the legacy of African Americans of the Civil Rights movement.

Damon Hamby of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church addressed the crowd.

His message: driving home “the legacy of the underdog.” Hamby encouraged the crowd to prolong the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., Thurgood Marshall, and others.

He encourages the children to recognize the struggles those pioneers went through.

“No matter what your situation, regardless of your color of your background, you can overcome the worst of circumstances. And that's what black history teaches us.”

Hamby says he hopes his message enlightens the audience, and helps pass the torch to the leaders of tomorrow.
