CHARLESTON – The House of Delegates rejected a controversial bill which would have allowed individuals to sue and claim settlement money.

House bill 4001 was struck down by a 55 to 41 vote Tuesday in the House. This followed a lengthy debate on the House floor.

The legislation would have allowed individuals to sue the state or businesses for fraud and then receive a portion of the settlement.

Officials say the business community fought hard against the bill.

In theory the bill would have rewarded taxpayers who uncovered wrongdoing.
