WELCH – A McDowell county drug store is celebrating a milestone after serving the Welch community for 100 years.

Flat Iron Drug Store has been a figure in Welch since 1914, and many of the clerks have been behind the counter for more than half of that time.

They say the store has weathered many changes; from typewriters to computers and starting over after a 2001 flood destroyed the store.

Arvel Wyatt has been a Flat Iron employee for 51 years but his motto for serving the people hasn't changed.

“We're still down home. Cause we have been customers for 50 years or longer. And those kind of people we enjoy,” says Wyatt.

He says he's enjoyed every minute of working at Flat Iron, and says he has at least a few more years left in him.
