DANIELS – A Raleigh County school recognizes Black
History Month with West Virginia’s “History Alive!” program.
An artist and actor portraying a pioneer from the
anti-slavery movement visited Daniels Elementary Wednesday.
Ilene Evans from the Humanities Council dressed as Underground
Railroad leader Harriet Tubman.
Evans performed for students, explaining Tubman’s
hardships and raising important questions about the history of slaves. She says
story-telling is her job 365 days a year.
“We think of it as a community service at one level
because helping understanding improves our life and not just our quality of
living but our appreciation, our gratitude, our joy”
Students at Daniels Elementary are studying Tubman and
her Underground Railroad in the classroom too.
