BECKLEY - A local college that's had huge success in several donation drives is now asking for the public's help to support troops in Afghanistan.
Valley College is teaming up with the 31 Gifts in hopes of making care packages for 60 soldiers.
The cinch-sacks, with yellow personalized ribbons, will be sold through Feb. 25. The college is accepting goodies like coffee and canned fruit through March 13. Valley College and 31 Gifts hope it will be a nice surprise for troops who have sacrificed so much.
"We want to send support all year round for our troops -- not just at Christmas time -- and sometimes we focus a lot on organizations at Christmas, but we forget about them in January, March, April, so we want to tell them, 'Thank you,' even though it's not Christmas," Valley College's Shelly Smith said.
To purchase a bag for a soldier or donate goodies, you can stop by the college's Beckley or Princeton campuses or contact Shelly Smith at firstname.lastname@example.org.
"It really makes you think about those that are across seas that aren't able to be with their friends and family no matter if it's Christmas or Easter, so we just want to let them know that we're behind them, and we care and appreciate them," Andrea Thompson, with 31 Gifts, told WOAY.
Other items you can donate include army socks, wet wipes, chap stick, homemade snacks, girl scout cookies, Ramon noodles, candy, lotion, shampoo and conditioner, combs, hand sanitizer, magazines and ingredients to make s'mores.
