CHARLESTON – A bill is moving through the State Senate that will allow Raleigh County to build a new veterans nursing home.

Senate Bill 523 passed by the military committee Tuesday which will allow the transfer of 17 acres behind the Jackie Withrow Hospital to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs.

The proposed VA nursing home will have 120 beds and help relieve some of the stress on the only other VA facility in West Virginia located in Clarksburg.

Senator Mike Green says there are more than 22,000 veterans living in the Mountain State and a new nursing home is long overdue.

“I think it's the smallest thing, smallest token of appreciation we can show to make sure that after the parades, after the ceremonial returns - that we are investing in and taking care of our veterans.”

The bill is currently waiting on the Senate finance committee, and if it passes it will go to the House.
