BECKLEY – A Raleigh County church is raising money for its mission support, and helping locals stay in shape.
St. Luke's Lutheran Church held its third-annual "Sweetheart Fun Run" this morning.
Runners battle a tough set of hills on a round-trip course, prompting race officials to call this the toughest 5K on the circuit.
Ribbons, t-shirts, and brunch was all part of the registration. And that money goes to the mission support which is a reserve fund for the church to distribute to the community in times of need.
“Around Christmas time if there's some children that need some toys or something like that of course we'll take care of them,” says event organizer Chris Meadows, “And it's whatever we can do to help the community is what this money is pooled up for.”
Runners say the course was tough but it was worth it in the end.
“Tougher than I remember it being,” said Terry McNicholas, “I ran it last year and I just don't remember it being as tough as it was. And last year I felt it was very poorly marked - they did a good job marking the course this year.”
The winning time for the 3.1-mile race was 22:07.
