BECKLEY - Health professionals in Raleigh County said they're happy with the public turnout at Friday’s "Heart Smart Fair."

Several departments at Raleigh General Hospital provided guests with information about heart disease, early intervention and diet tips. Staff said it's important to eat healthy and watch for early warning signs of a heart attack.

Jamie Fitzpatrick attended the fair with her parents.

“My grandfather died around 40 of a heart attack,” she said. “My dad was 9, so it runs in the family. I was born with a heart condition. I had a procedure when I was 17 to fix it, so I'm good now, so we're just here to learn more about the heart basically.”

Doctors and nurses told Newswatch their goal is to educate the public and make the community stronger through education.

Friday's participants will receive free cholesterol screenings and be entered for a chance to win a one-year family gym membership.
