FAYETTE COUNTY - An accident involving a Fayette County school bus sent over 20 of the student passengers to various hospitals.
It happened yesterday right outside of Montgomery on Route 61 when the bus driver hit a wall while transporting approximately 30 middle and high school age students. According to school officials, the bus driver was proceeding on his route to Valley Middle and High schools when the accident occurred. Superintendent Keith Butcher said many of the students were injured and treated on scene by EMS, then transported to the hospital for care. Faculty members from the school arrived shortly after the crash to provide triage to students. Officials said, with today’s technology, many of the children were able to contact their parents directly after the accident. The superintendent said, in the future, a procedure for this type of incident will be put into place.
“The safety and well-being of our students is utmost in any school system, so we certainly want to make sure our students are ok. Also, following this incident, review procedures and see not only what we could have done better, but what can we change to handle incidents in the future,” said Butcher.
The superintendent said the accident is still under investigation and until the situation has been resolved, an experienced bus driver will be taking over that route.
