WELCH - A former brother of The Saint Peters Catholic Church was sent to prison on Wednesday after pleading guilty to sex crimes involving a minor who belonged to the church.

Brother Charles Roger Hannah was sent to prison for 2-to-10-years after being charged with soliciting a 16-year-old girl through the internet.

He admitted to a McDowell County Judge of the email solicitation to the child after his interest in her grew through their involvement in a church play.

Being a part of an obscured German order, the convicted sex offender says he was allowed to drink beer and wine, and admits to being intoxicated while sending the emails.

The Judge denied Hannan's request for alternative sentencing of probation by saying that he was making an example and not setting a precedent by showing that sex crimes against minors will not be tolerated in McDowell County.

According to the defendant, the details of his crime are heading to the Vatican to see if he may remain a member of the church.
