CHARLESTON - Tax season is here and the Internal Revenue Service estimated that each year West Virginians eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) leave millions of dollars unclaimed that can be used to pay down debt, open savings accounts, and improve lives in many ways.
January 31 was National EITC awareness day. It marked the official opening of free tax preparation sites across the country. These sites are open at more than 80 locations across the Mountain State.
"We want to make sure that you get as much money as you can back into your pocket," said Melissa Aguilar with the West Virginia Alliance for Sustainable Families, "We work real hard as citizens of West Virginia, and so, we want to make sure that you have the information in front of you."
People between the ages of 25 and 65 may qualify for EITC if their adjusted gross income was below $51,000 in 2013.
"Even if you don't have specific information, or even Internet access, go you your local vista site and ask for EITC," Aguilar said.
